Are you looking for Year 6 SPAG revision resources to help pupils prepare for the Key Stage 2 English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) test? This test often features questions linked to year 6 objectives plus many topics covered in previous years. It can be difficult to find year 6 SPAG revision resources which offer the extensive coverage needed. It can also be hard to find engaging materials, particularly when it comes to some of the more challenging concepts.
Here are some quality resources which have been specifically created to help year 6 pupils tackle the end of KS2 SPaG / GPS Test.
Resources to Support Revision for Paper 1
Paper 1 of the KS2 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) test is 45 minutes long and usually contains around 50 questions. Content is related to Appendix 2 of the English National Curriculum. Questions are mainly linked to grammar and punctuation. There are also a few spelling questions which are typically linked to root words, prefixes and suffixes.
Primary Texts provides a Year 6 SPAG revision bundle which contains 30 PPT lessons linked to the content of GPS Test Paper 1. This comprehensive resource offers coverage of commonly occuring topics. These no-prep, simple to use revision PPTs include explanation, practice exercises and opportunites for discussion Plus, each PPT is accompanied by a SATs style mini-assessment. Resources to Support Revision for Paper 2
At the end of KS2, pupils' knowledge of the spellings in Appendix 1 of the English National Curriculum is assessed in two different ways:
- A pupil’s ability to spell the words in the statutory word lists for year 3 to 4 and 5 to 6 forms part of the Teacher Writing Assessment framework. Though words from these lists occasionally appear in the KS2 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) test, they are not the main focus of it.
- Paper 2 of the GPS test primarily assesses a pupil's understanding of the spelling rules and patterns for KS2 which are detailed over several pages in Appendix 1.
The GPS spelling test contains 20 spellings and is around 15 minutes in duration. Achieving a low score on the spelling aspect of the GPS test is likely it make it difficult for a pupil to gain an overall pass at the expected level. To give pupils the best chance of success, teachers need to ensure full revision of the KS2 spelling rules.
Primary Texts offers two useful spelling PPTs that present the KS2 spelling rules from Appendix 1 of the English National Curriculum in the form of a PPT. These PPTs are great for teaching, reviewing and discussing the statutory spelling rules that year 6 pupils are expected to know. They are available on our website free of charge. Useful Practice Books
The resources discussed will help teachers to teach and review content that is likely to be on the KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test. It is surprising however (or perhaps not that surprising to seasoned teachers!), how quickly pupils forget content that has been recently taught. Helping pupils to retain their GPS knowledge, requires practice, practice and more practice!
Repeatedly providing year 6 pupils with a mix of SATs styles GPS questions will help them to keep what they have learnt fresh in their minds. It will increase their familiarity with answering different types of test questions and help them gain confidence. There is a danger though of worksheet overload! To avoid continually photocopying and handing out sheets of paper, I think it makes sense, if possible, to provide pupils with a high-quality workbook. For good solid straight-forward practice, I would recommend CGP's range of Year 6 SPAG revision resources.
