Resources You Can Use to Master the Primary English National Curriculum

The national curriculum for English programmes of study for KS1 and KS2 can be found here in their entirety. This 88 page document contains the objectives for teaching speaking and listening, reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling for each year group from year 1 through to year 6.

Starting Points for Planning

When planning English lessons and units in primary, checking what the national curriculum expectations are should be the first step in the process. Ideally, all planning should be based around one or more national curriculum objectives. All strands of your planning (teaching points, activities, plenary etc.) should pull towards achieving these objectives.  However, due to its size and organisation sifting through the National English progammes of study for KS1 and Ks2 to check the specific requirements for your year group can be an onerous task!
