Developing knowledge of the nine parts of speech is incredibly important. It helps students to understand sentence construction and how language works. When students have this understanding, they are able to focus on specific aspects of their written work in order to improve it. Without this understanding, teacher comments such as 'Try adding adjectives.', 'Use powerful verbs.', etc. are meaningless!
